Introduction – From Hippocrates to the Eye–Skin Axis
For centuries, medicine has studied the eye and the skin separately. Yet Hippocrates and the ancient Greek physicians had already observed that “the eyes reflect the balance of the entire body.” The eye and the skin share a common embryological origin — the ectoderm — and a continuous neuro-immune and vascular network.
