Dermophthalmology is a new clinical field

That bridges Ophthalmology with Dermatology.

It is based on the common embryological origin of the eye and the skin from the ectoderm and approaches the eye and its surrounding area as a single ecosystem: the Ophthalmoderma.

Skin and eye relationships

Although many scientific studies had already highlighted the links between skin and eyes, there was until now no unified framework to connect them.
Dermophthalmology organizes these fragmented findings into a coherent scientific foundation, introducing a new culture of care that unites:

The health

The health of eyelids, eyelashes, eyebrows, peri-ocular area, which impact directly the ocular surface,

Prevention

The prevention and daily hygiene,

Aesthetics

The aesthetics of the gaze.

Dermophthalmology does not limit itself to treating existing problems; it emphasizes prevention, ensuring that vision is protected before serious symptoms appear.

Dermophthalmology

Dermophthalmology was created to answer an everyday need: for eyes to be not only healthy and comfortable, but also beautiful.

It brings together knowledge that already existed but had not been combined.
It transforms scattered studies into a new medical reality, establishing the concept of eye hygiene as an essential part of life — just like oral or skin hygiene.
In this way, it paves the way for a new culture of care that strengthens vision, comfort, and the beauty of the gaze.
Prevention lies at its core: the earlier daily care is adopted, the more effectively dry eye, blepharitis, and periocular aesthetic alterations can be prevented.

History & Founding

The emergence of a new need
Dermophthalmology was born out of a real public need: to find solutions for daily tearing, itching, irritation, and blurred vision.
Symptoms that were often considered “normal” and treated with indifference, without recognizing their importance for eye health and visual quality.

The paradox of health and beauty
At the same time, there was a clear gap in aesthetic medicine around the eyes.
While Botox and fillers smooth wrinkles and refine the contours, the eyes themselves often remained tired, red, or watery.
The beauty of the gaze could not rely solely on the skin—it required the health of the eyes as well.

Observing the paradox
This dual paradox—in health and in aesthetics—sparked a multi-year research effort that extended across different areas of medicine.
The need to establish scientific substance for daily eye care led to a deeper understanding of the interconnections and gaps in both health and aesthetics.

From idea to foundation
Through this journey, John Tsakalos highlighted the necessity of establishing eye hygiene as a daily practice, comparable to oral or skin hygiene.
By introducing for the first time the term Dermophthalmology, he helped shape a new framework that sees the eye and the skin not as separate entities, but as a unified ecosystem: the Ophthalmoderma.

John Tsakalos – Founder
(Pioneer of Dermophthalmology)

John Tsakalos is the visionary founder of Breath Purity, the company that helped establish Dermophthalmology as an emerging scientific field — a new scientific field uniting Ophthalmology and Dermatology.
Through the creation of the Ophthalmogen line, he redefined the relationship between eye health, aesthetics, and daily hygiene, bridging science, culture, and innovation under the vision "Conceived in Greece" — a tribute to Greece’s timeless role in uniting medicine and philosophy.
His work positions Greece as a global hub of medical creativity, bridging ancient wisdom with modern science.

International acceptance and the preparation of WOD
The idea was immediately embraced by the scientific team of Breath Purity and soon attracted the interest of leading Greek and international Ophthalmology and Dermatology bodies.
This collaboration laid the groundwork for the institutionalization of the new specialty and the preparation of the World Organization of Dermophthalmology (WOD), the first international body dedicated to the promotion of Dermophthalmology.

Today and the future

Dermophthalmology is now a new clinical field that places prevention, hygiene, and aesthetic eye care at its core.
It addresses both the everyday needs of health and the timeless desire for the beauty of the gaze.
In doing so, it enhances the quality of vision and life, and opens the way for innovative therapies and practices that unite Ophthalmology with Dermatology.
Most importantly, Dermophthalmology highlights for the first time the role of prevention in eye care: just as oral and skin hygiene radically transformed health, so too can ophthalmic-dermal hygiene prevent problems before they become chronic diseases.
